BU Purchasing Commodity Buyer – Resin
Position Summary
The Commodity Buyer – Resin is responsible for developing and executing the sourcing strategy for raw material resins (e.g., PP, PE, ABS, PC‑ABS, PA, POM, TPE/TPU) used in automotive components.
This role ensures competitive pricing, security of supply, supplier performance, and compliance with quality and sustainability requirements.
The Commodity Buyer works closely with Engineering, Program Purchasing, Operations, Finance, and suppliers to support current production and new program launches.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commodity Strategy & Market Management
- Develop and maintain the resin commodity strategy aligned with corporate and BU targets.
- Analyze global resin market trends:
- Crude oil & naphtha indexation
- Polymerization capacity and regional supply-demand balance
- Additives and compounding trends
- Recycled & bio‑based material evolution
- Establish preferred supplier panels and negotiate long-term contracts.
2. Sourcing & Negotiation
- Lead RFQs for all resin requirements (virgin, compounded, recycled grades).
- Negotiate pricing, indexation mechanisms, payment terms, and logistic conditions.
- Input resin cost evolution to pricing teams and program buyers.
- Ensure compliance with purchasing processes and global commodity rules.
3. Supplier Relationship & Performance Management
- Manage and evaluate resin suppliers based on:
- Cost competitiveness
- Quality performance
- Delivery reliability
- Technical support capabilities
- Sustainability criteria (CO₂, recycled content, circularity)
- Conduct regular supplier business reviews.
- Develop joint improvement plans when performance gaps exist.
4. Cost Optimization & Productivity
- Identify and execute cost reduction initiatives:
- Resin grade optimization and homologation
- Alternative suppliers or regional sourcing
- Recycled materials or lighter formulations
- Indexation and hedging strategies
- Support Engineering in design-to-cost and VA/VE activities.
5. Program & Plant Support
- Provide resin cost assumptions for RFQs during acquisition phases.
- Support Program Purchasing with resin sourcing decisions for new launches.
- Ensure resin suppliers are ready for SOP (safety stock, logistics flows, homologation).
- Solve plant resin supply issues (shortages, allocations, quality events).
6. Sustainability & Compliance
- Drive sustainability roadmap for resin:
- Increase recycled content (PCR, PIR)
- Promote bio‑based or CO₂‑reduced grades
- Collaborate with suppliers on CO₂ reporting and LCA data
- Ensure adherence to CSR, REACH, and material compliance regulations.
7. Reporting & Governance
- Report resin price evolution, risks, and productivity achievements.
- Maintain accurate databases for index-based pricing and forecasts.
- Prepare commodity reviews and executive presentations.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Business, or Supply Chain.
- 3–7+ years of purchasing experience, ideally in raw materials or resin.
- Solid understanding of polymer markets, compounding, and resin manufacturing processes.
- Strong negotiation and analytical skills.
- Experience in the automotive industry (Tier‑1 preferred).
- Fluent in English; other languages helpful (German, French, Chinese).
