SITE QUALITY PROFESSIONAL -
POSITION SUMMARY
The Site Quality Engineer applies quality engineering principles, tools, and problem-solving methods to improve product quality, process capability, supplier performance, and customer satisfaction. This role supports the Elkhart site by maintaining compliance with internal quality systems, customer-specific requirements, IATF 16949 expectations, and safe manufacturing practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Quality Engineering / Customer Requirements
- Monitor internal, customer, and supplier quality performance; identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead or support corrective and preventive actions using effective root cause analysis, containment, verification, and closure methods.
- Support customer requirements, quality objectives, scorecards, customer portals, capacity analysis inputs, logistics quality information, and customer-specific quality documentation.
- Initiate actions to prevent nonconformities related to product, process, and quality systems; identify, record, and escalate quality issues appropriately.
- Verify implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions and process improvements.
- Maintain authority and responsibility to stop production when a quality or safety issue arises.
Supplier / Incoming Quality
- Assist with supplier quality performance monitoring, supplier corrective actions, supplier audits, and supplier-related issue resolution.
- Support incoming inspection activities and troubleshooting of material issues related to form, fit, function, documentation, or customer requirements.
- Effectively respond to supplier inquiries, quality concerns, and complaints while protecting customer and site requirements.
Product / Process Quality
- Perform or support product, process, layered, dock, and system audits to confirm compliance with PPAP, control plans, work instructions, and process documentation.
- Support MRB, containment, sorting, disposition, rework verification, and nonconforming material processes.
- Assist with gauge control, MSA requirements, calibration support, measurement equipment use, and inspection method validation.
- Analyze technical documents, scientific data, failure data, process data, inspection results, and quality records to support decisions.
Compliance / IMS
- Follow applicable company policies, OSHA requirements, ISO/IATF procedures, customer-specific requirements, environmental requirements, and document control practices.
- Respect Quality, Safety, and Environmental standards within the Integrated Management System and contribute to process management and improvement.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support business objectives, customer requirements, operational needs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout office, lab, warehouse, and production areas as needed.
- Ability to use a computer, keyboard, phone, and standard office equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; heavier items require assistance or mechanical lifting equipment.
- Ability to wear required PPE and follow all site safety requirements while in production or test areas.
- Ability to perform inspections using handheld gauges, measurement equipment, CMM/vision systems, or similar tools as required.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a combination of office, engineering, lab, warehouse, and manufacturing floor environments.
- Manufacturing areas may include moving equipment, powered industrial trucks, electrical test equipment, noise, temperature variation, and PPE requirements.
- May require occasional schedule flexibility to support production, customer needs, launches, audits, equipment trials, or urgent quality/engineering issues.
- May support urgent containment, customer response, audit preparation, or production quality concerns outside standard office routines.
Evaluation Metrics/KPIs
- Customer complaints, quality concerns, and corrective actions responded to and closed on time.
- Internal and supplier corrective actions completed with verified effectiveness and recurrence prevention.
- Audit findings layered process audits, product audits, and process nonconformities closed timely.
- Scrap, rework, containment, MRB aging, and repeat defects reduced or maintained within site targets.
- Gauge calibration, MSA, inspection records, and quality documentation maintained accurately and on schedule.
Qualifications
Education / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent quality/manufacturing experience required; bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of quality engineering, supplier quality, manufacturing quality, or related technical experience required.
- Automotive manufacturing experience is strongly preferred; battery, electrical, electronic, or high-complexity assembly experience is a plus.
- Training or experience in Lean, Six Sigma, TQM, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plan, MSA, SPC, and corrective action preferred.
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of IATF 16949, ISO quality systems, automotive customer-specific requirements, audit principles, and quality documentation.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, basic GD&T, control plans, inspection standards, technical documents, and process records.
- Experience with measurement tools and systems such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, CMM, Keyence IM/WM, or comparable inspection equipment preferred.
- Strong root cause analysis and corrective action capability, including 5 Why, fishbone, 8D, containment, verification, and effectiveness review.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel; experience with SharePoint, Teams, SAP, customer portals, and quality management systems preferred.
